We are the North Country School, a co-ed boarding and day school for grades 4-9.

Across our educational program, which includes our outdoor, residential, arts and work-job programs, students engage with one another, their teachers and the activities at hand. Recognizing that children are inquisitive by nature and are natural problem solvers, we provide hands-on and collaborative lessons that help students draw real world and personal connections. By exposing children to a variety of learning opportunities over the course of a day and by guiding them through projects to complete over time, our students learn to ask and answer their own questions and develop the skills that help them do so along the way.

Creativity in children is both an innate and a teachable skill. Recognizing that creative thinking is as essential as critical thinking, we nurture creativity in not only our extensive arts offerings, but also all areas of school life. Urging – and at times requiring – students to be creative in their approach leads to ingenious science experiments, inspired literary analysis, individual writing voice, and imaginative multi-media presentations. It is a natural process – tapping into children’s creativity to boost learning in all areas – and students are eager to use original thinking for projects that require innovation and invention.

Our campus, in the High Peaks region of the “forever wild” Adirondack Park, allows children to learn and explore in a wilderness setting. Few middle schools have the advantage of science survey courses with dozens of hands-on labs and experiments each year or English and art classes that climb mountains in order to paint landscapes and write poetry. Indeed, where most classrooms end, ours begin, and our students develop a deep appreciation for the outdoors and our natural resources. Every afternoon and weekend, NCS students have their choice of hiking, camping, biking, rock and ice climbing, skiing or horseback riding on our 200-acres of land and many miles of trails.
